Taking one for the team!

Hey All,

Last week, the HLS team made their way to the Adirondack  Mountains to fish for toothy Northern Pike. Not only did we catch fish but we got a great recipe for cooking them up from a great chef friend of mine.  I have to say though, the trip was not without incident and I had to take one for the team.

Let me set this up…  The day was perfect and we were hitting fish pretty regular when I set the hook on a really nice Northern. Now we were set up for pretty big fish; 20lb test braided line, 30lb test 18″ leader and a #4 Mepps treble hook.

I brought this nice looking fish to the boat and as I did the word lunker was used quite frequently. The next thing that was said was, “Where the hell is the net?” and that was followed by, “I think we forgot it.” I was told to keep the fish in the water until our guide was able to grab the leader and pull the monster in, but being the overzealous fool that I am I tried to pull the fish into the boat.

Now this is were things get weird. One of the three hooks that make up the treble hook broke, probably the one in the fish’s lip. The lure and the other two hooks came flying at me – then the fish got away. Damn, it was a really nice fish.

It was then that I looked down and noticed the hook in my wrist! Quickly, I pulled out my Flip video camera, of course not the first aid kit, and shot the video below. This video is not for the young or those easily shaken. Enjoy.

Have a happy and safe 4th of July.

-Pete
